Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio) died Wednesday at the age of 58, becoming the seventh member of the House to die in office since January 20
Huron Hospital spokeswoman said Tubbs Jones had suffered an aneurysm that caused her to lose consciousness while driving in Cleveland Tuesday night. Her doctor said the aneurysm was in an inaccessible part of her brain, and that she had “limited” brain function in the hours before her death.
The daughter of an airport skycap, Tubbs Jones was the first black woman to represent Ohio in the House. Since 2007, she served as the chairwoman of the House Ethics Committee, and she was a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
The death of Tubbs Jones came after a day of conflicting and sometimes erroneous reports about her condition. Several media outlets incorrectly reported in mid-afternoon that she had died - creating confusion among reporters and members of Congress alike. In the minutes between the first reports of Tubbs Jones’ death and the televised press conference from the hospital, the office of Sen. John F. Kerry put out a statement lamenting the congresswoman’s passing.
On Capitol Hill, Tubbs Jones' staffers gathered for a closed-door meeting around noon Wednesday. Her office planned to hold a prayer vigil later in the day.
Friends and colleagues were devastated. Ohio Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich said he and his wife would be leaving Washington to offer “comfort and support” to Tubbs Jones’ family.
Police pulled over Tubbs Jones’ car in Cleveland around 9 p.m. Tuesday after noticing that it was moving erratically. According to local news reports, the car started rolling again as an officer approached the door. Once the car stopped in a grassy field, police discovered the congresswoman — unconscious but breathing — in the driver’s seat.
Jones attended law school at Case Western University and served as a judge and a prosecutor before being elected to Congress in 1998.
When the Democrats took control of the House in 2007, Speaker Nancy Pelosi named Tubbs Jones as the chairwoman of the Ethics Committee.
