Geologists and expert scientists say the back-to-back earthquakes are happening frequently against the norm

As earthquakes are a natural phenomenon that geologists and scientists continue to examine, what's recently noticeable is the large double earthquakes that are happening within seconds and/or minutes--devastating earthquake victims across the world. The shallow earthquakes are also a concern for scientists as human causalities increase from such disasters. A shallow earthquake is an earthquake that originates between the Earth's surface and a depth of 70 kilometers (about 43 miles).

14 August 2026
An earthquake occurred off the north coast of Flores Island.
10 August 2026
An earthquake occurred near San José del Palmar, Colombia, west of Bogota.
28 July 2026
An earthquake occurred near Uto, Japan, causing extensive damage to structures.
17 July 2026
A shallow magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred just offshore near the border of Mexico and Guatemala. A small tsunami was produced locally.
24 June 2026
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred immediately after a separate 7.2 near Valencia, Venezuela.
Meanwhile in the states, California sits at a high risk of a massive earthquake due to the "1,000-Year High Stress." Recent studies show that segments of the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems have reached their highest tectonic stress levels in a millennium because they have not produced a major earthquake in over a century to release built-up pressure. Also researchers at San Jose State University found that the San Andreas Fault is slipping faster than previously thought, according to a new report.
